The third NYC challenge

On March 1, 2019, we opened applications for the third Women's Weekend Film Challenge. Out of an applicant pool of over 400 women, 200 women were selected and placed on seven film crews. The seven film crews had between 27 and 31 women filling the roles of directors, producers, actors, DPs, ACs, ADs, PAs, art directors, graphic designers, gaffers, recordists, editors and more.

We were beyond excited to partner with RED, Zeiss, AbelCine, IDX, Lacie, Gotham Sound, Lightbulb Grip & Electric, and so many other amazing companies to provide top-of-the-line gear for our participants.

Each of the teams was named after these successful and inspiring women who act and produce: Lena Waithe, Marsai Martin, Mindy Kaling, Elizabeth Banks, Kerry Washington, Eva Longoria, and Alysia Reiner.

On March 30 the participants met each other for the first time during their pre-production meeting. A week later, filming began! On Thursday, April 4, each team received a different genre (pulled out of a hat) and an object they had to include in their film (a tacky souvineer). By Sunday, April 7, all seven crews submitted their completed films by the midnight deadline. These completed films were screened in front of a sold out audience of 260 filmmakers at the Museum of the Moving Image on Thursday April 18.
